Getting Yourself and Your Kids Ready for a Healthy Back-to-School Season

As summer draws to a close, the back-to-school season arrives with new opportunities for growth and learning. As a holistic health coach and a parent, I understand the importance of ensuring our kids are physically and mentally prepared for this transition. Here are some holistic tips for back to school health and wellness so you and your kids can be ready for a healthy and successful school year.

1. Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine: During the carefree days of summer, sleep schedules might have become more relaxed. However, a good night's sleep is essential for your child's cognitive function, mood, and overall well-being. Gradually transition back to a regular sleep schedule by gradually adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep, depending on your child's age.

2. Nutrient-Rich Meals and Snacks: Healthy eating is crucial for sustaining your child's energy levels and promoting their concentration throughout the school day. Provide well-balanced meals that include lean proteins, whole grains, a variety of fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats. Avoid excessive sugar and processed foods that can lead to energy crashes and mood swings. Check out our recipe page for some of our family favorites!

3. Boost Immunity: As schools can be breeding grounds for germs, it's important to support your child's immune system. Offer foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C (found in citrus fruits), zinc (found in nuts and seeds), and probiotics (found in yogurt or fermented foods). Encourage good hand hygiene to prevent the spread of illnesses.

4. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports cognitive function and helps your child stay focused in the classroom. Provide a reusable water bottle and remind your child to drink water throughout the day. Herbal teas and water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon can also contribute to hydration. My kids love adding berries, cucumbers, mint and chamomile to theirs!

5. Manage Stress: Starting a new school year can bring about feelings of anxiety and stress. Teach your child mindfulness techniques, deep breathing exercises, or simple yoga poses to help manage these emotions. Encourage open communication so your child feels comfortable discussing their worries with you.

6. Create a Positive Homework Environment: Designate a quiet and clutter-free space for your child to do their homework. Ensure proper lighting and ergonomic seating to prevent strain. Encourage short breaks to stretch and move around, which can enhance focus and productivity.

7. Foster Social Connections: Maintaining friendships and building social connections is an important aspect of holistic health. Encourage playdates, group activities, and open conversations about making new friends at school.

8. Practice Gratitude: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude with your child. Each day, encourage them to reflect on positive experiences, achievements, and things they're thankful for. This practice can enhance overall well-being and perspective.

By incorporating these holistic approaches into your back-to-school routine, you're setting the foundation for your child's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Remember, small changes can lead to big improvements in your child's health and success throughout the school year.
